TL;DR
You can mix a professional vocal in Ableton Live with stock devices only. The order that works: clean up (gain stage, cut noise), subtractive EQ Eight, compression (Compressor or Glue), de-ess with a second EQ Eight in mid mode, additive EQ for air, then reverb and delay on return tracks. Set levels last, referencing against a track you like.
Ableton Live is built for beats, but plenty of producers get stuck the moment a vocal lands in the session. The stock devices are all you need to make a vocal sit properly. This is the exact chain, in order, using nothing you don't already own.

Step 1: Gain Stage and Clean Up
Before any processing, get the level right. Drop a Utility at the top of the chain and set the vocal so its loudest parts peak around -6 dB. Mixing into a vocal that's already slamming the ceiling makes every plugin behave unpredictably.
Cut the rumble: EQ Eight, high-pass filter from around 80 to 100 Hz to remove sub rumble and plosives.
Clean the dead air: use a Gate, or edit out breaths and noise between phrases by hand for a tighter result.
Licensed acapellas: the best marketplace vocals arrive dry and clean, so you skip most of this. That's why producers buy them ready to mix.

Step 2: Subtractive EQ (Cut Before You Boost)
Add an EQ Eight. Your first EQ move is always about removing problems, not adding shine.
- High-pass around 80 to 100 Hz (already done in step 1 if you prefer).
- Sweep for mud between 200 and 500 Hz: boost a narrow band, sweep until it sounds boxy, then cut a few dB there.
- Tame harshness around 2 to 5 kHz if the vocal is grating, with a gentle wide cut.

Step 3: Compression
Compression evens out the performance so quiet words and loud words sit at a consistent level. Use Ableton's Compressor.
Ratio: 3:1 to 4:1 for a natural pop vocal.
Attack: medium (10 to 30 ms) to let consonants punch through.
Release: auto, or around 100 to 200 ms.
Gain reduction: aim for 3 to 6 dB on the loudest words.
For a busy or dynamic vocal, stack two compressors doing a little each (3 dB then 3 dB) instead of one doing a lot. It sounds more natural than crushing everything with a single device.
Step 4: De-Ess the Sibilance
If the "s" and "t" sounds spit, control them. Ableton doesn't have a dedicated de-esser, but a second EQ Eight in mid/side or with an envelope does the job, or use a Multiband Dynamics device targeting the 5 to 8 kHz band. Only pull it down when the sibilance actually happens.

Step 5: Additive EQ for Air and Presence
Now that the vocal is clean and controlled, add character. On the same or a third EQ Eight:
- Presence: a gentle boost around 3 to 5 kHz brings the vocal forward in the mix.
- Air: a high shelf above 10 kHz adds a modern, expensive sheen. Use lightly.
Step 6: Reverb and Delay on Return Tracks
Never put reverb directly on the vocal channel. Create return tracks so you control the wet level independently and keep the dry vocal upfront.
Return A, Reverb: a short-to-medium plate or room, high-passed around 300 Hz so it doesn't muddy the low mids. Send a little.
Return B, Delay: a quarter-note or eighth-note delay, filtered and synced, for depth on the ends of phrases.

Step 7: Set Levels and Reference
Balance the vocal against the beat last. It should sit on top, clearly audible, without burying the instrumental. Pull up a commercial track in a similar genre on a separate channel and A/B your vocal level against it.

Save It as a Rack
Once your chain works, select all the devices, group them into an Audio Effect Rack, and save it as a preset. Next vocal, drop the rack on and tweak instead of building from scratch. Build a couple of racks (one for pop, one for rap) and your mixing gets much faster.
Quick Troubleshooting
Vocal sounds muddy: cut more around 200 to 400 Hz and high-pass the reverb return.
Vocal sounds thin: ease off the high-pass and add a touch of low mids back.
Vocal gets lost in the beat: carve a small dip in the instrumental around the vocal's presence range, or automate the vocal up in the chorus.
